Titanium Internet Security 2012 - Slow Internet Browsing Speed

Hello!

I have been using Titanium Internet Security 2012 for about a month. A week ago, it started slowing internet browsing down to a crawl. If I enable its protection against web threats ("Block potentially dangerous websites"), any web page takes several seconds to load.

I have just run two consecutive tests at speedtest.net, and the latency problem is apparent:

  1. Web protection disabled: Ping = 52 ms, Download = 2.38 Mbps, Upload = 0.38 Mbps
  2. Web protection enabled: Ping = 10,003 ms, Download = 2.49 Mbps, Upload = 0.03 Mbps

Is there any hotfix for this problem? Or can anyone suggest another solution? Everything works fine if I disable web protection, but that's a bit self-defeating, and Internet Security 2012 keeps complaining about it, too.

For the record, I'm running Windows XP SP3; my web browsers are Mozilla Firefox 8.0.1 and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702; and Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 20120 version 5.0.1280 reports I already have the latest updates.

Thanks for your help,

Giacomo

Welcome aboard! Posted Image

Check for viruses:

Download ComboFix from the any of the locations given in this website:

    • IMPORTANT !!! You need to Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
      • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you are still unsure on how to do this, see here
      • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
      • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
      • If you already have the Recovery Console preinstalled, it will not ask for the following. If it does prompt, allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

      Posted Image

Click Yes, to continue scanning for malware. Please be patient and don't use the PC whilst it is scanning.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy & paste the contents of this log (also found at C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply at your topic.

      NEXT

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

Click the cog in the upper right

Select down to and including your main drive, once done select the Automatic scan tab and press Start Scan

Allow AVP to delete all infections found
Once it has finished select report tab (last tab)
Select Detected threats report from the left and press Save button
Save it to your desktop and attach to your next post

Hi Giacomo,

First all of, we do apologize for the inconvenience and let me help you with your concern. Please try to apply a hotfix that you can download and the link below:

Re: Titanium Internet Security 2012 - Slow Internet Browsing Speed

Hi silentpal,

Thanks for pointing me to that hotfix: I had not understood it could apply to my problem.

It certainly does improve things, though I wouldn't say it provides a full solution. After applying the hotfix, I can once again browse the internet while leaving the protection against web threats turned on. However, web pages remain slower to load, and consecutive tests at Speedtest.net report latencies of 94 ms without and 384 ms with Internet Security 2012.

If you have any further suggestions to avoid the four-fold increase in ping times, they would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Giacomo

Re: Titanium Internet Security 2012 - Slow Internet Browsing Speed

Hi malwarekiller,

Thank you very much for your quick reply!

I followed your advice almost immediately, but then the Kaspersky tool took several hours for a full scan. After it finished I also applied the TrendMicro hotfix, as recommended by Silentpal, and that yielded a considerable if not perfect improvement.

In any case, since I ran the scans, here are the results. I followed your instructions and ran ComboFix first, but I'll report the detected threats from Kaspersky first, because it's a much shorter list.

Status: Deleted   (events: 1)
1/23/2012 4:20:16 PM    Deleted    virus HEUR:Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Generic    C:\Documents and Settings\Giacomo\My Documents\Computer\Installers\idCAT\setup-clauer-idCAT.exe    High

I might explain that the file in question was the setup program for the software for an electronic ID from the local government, which I've installed a couple of years ago. I let Kaspersky delete the installer, but I remain a bit skeptical it actually contained a trojan.

Finally, the board won't let me copy the ComboFix log in this message, as it is too long. So I'll just post it separately below.

Thanks for any further suggestions!

Re: Titanium Internet Security 2012 - Slow Internet Browsing Speed

If the speed of your internet is faster while Trend Micro is off , you may want to check for any conflicting software on your computer. Conflicting software like 3rd party antivirus, or any application that might be triggering Trend program to work hard on the background.

You may also try to flush the dns.

1.  Go to command prompt and type ipconfig/flushdns and press enter.

Try deleting cookies and temporary files and look if it may help.

Deleting cookies:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. In the Start search (or Search for programs and files) field type in "shell:cookies" without the " ".

  3. Click Ok or press Enter on your keyboard.

  4. A new window will open and will give a list of text document files.

  5. Delete all the files in the folder excluding the "index.dat" file by selecting all of them then press

the keys "SHIFT - DEL (Delete)" on your keyboard to delete the files permanently.

  6. Close the window after you have deleted all the text document files.

  Deleting temporary internet files:

  1. Click the Start button.

  2. In the Start earch (or Search for programs and files) field type in "%temp%" without the " ".

  3. Click Ok or press Enter on your keyboard.

  4. A new window will open and will give a list of files.

  5. Delete as many files as you can in the folder by selecting all of them then press

the keys "SHIFT - DEL (Delete)" on your keyboard to delete the files permanently.

  6. If there will some items that cannot be deleted, that's alright, you can SKIP deleting them.

  7. Close the window after you have deleted most of the files if not all.

If in case that still issue persist, you may do clean uninstallation of Trend Micro program and just reinstall the program again.

Re: Titanium Internet Security 2012 - Slow Internet Browsing Speed

Hi Giacomo,

Have you tried checking your Internet Explorer add-ons sometimes these add-ons causes the slowness of your Internet Explorer browsing and plus please avoid having 2 or more than Anti-virus program to avoid conflicts.

Your Titanium program is using Smart Protection Network where in it checks each web site you are trying to visit for complete protection, it will stop these malicious programs from the location or the origin rather than to its destination.

We call this feature of Titanium progam as URL or Web Reputation Service so it is possible that there is a delay on your Internet browsing. Maybe you the speed of your Internet browsing is tolerable not unless you really want faster browsing try to consult your Internet Service Provider on how you can boost your connection speed.

Hope this will enlighten you!

Regards,

silentpal
