Google toolbar virus?

I have been working to fix several family computers that have been infected with a virus that appears to have stemmed from the Google toolbar.  Symptoms include the toolbar being altered, being directed to web pages that you did not request, and Windows Update no longer functioning.  Various anti-virus and anti-malware programs have located a number of trojans.  Below is the logfile from HijackThis.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Google toolbar virus?

Hi, Stingray!

I have analyzed the log file. It shows that you have installed a couple of antivirus programs. This would even make your computer more vulnerable to viruses for they might cause conflict to each other and lead to their features to malfunction. I would suggest that you just leave one installed. The log file also showed a fake antivirus program component in your system which may be the main reason why you’re getting this trouble of being redirected. Please have all the items below selected and fixed through hijackthis.exe:

1. O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)

2. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PersonalAV] C:\Program Files\PersonalAV\pav.exe

3. O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4051/ftp.coupons.com/r3302/cpbrkpie.cab

4. O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - avgrsstx.dll (file missing)

After having these items fixed, go straight to C:\Program Files\ and delete the folder, PersonalAV.

You might also want to try using Trend Micro Free Online Scan, Housecall:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I have not heard nor experienced Google Toolbar to be part of getting virus infections. It may sometimes cause conflict with other programs. Very rare, though.

Good day!

Re: Google toolbar virus?

Thank you very much.  I have "fixed" the items that you listed and looked for the PersonalAV folder in c:\Program Files.  This folder did not exist.  This machine had a fake virus scanner infection a year or more ago and we had cleaned it up and it appeared to be fine.  I am guessing we removed the folder at that time.

I have run HouseCall several times and it had found several files and many cookies associated with Trojans.  The most recent scan before we started this thread didn't find anything.

As to your comment about the multiple virus scanners. we typically don't run multiple but had tried a few over the last few days to see if they could find the problem.  Would you recommend deinstalling them prior to running House Call again?

Thank you very much!

Re: Google toolbar virus?

Hi Lori,

With the symptoms that you've mentioned, unable to open Microsoft Update site and website gets redirected when you click on a google search result. This is actually caused by a Rootkit infection.

Rootkit is a type of a virus that modifies core software components of your computer, inserting code which attempts to hide the "infection". know more about rootkits

We have experts here at Trend Micro that can assist you in removing these types of infection. Please click this link for more information http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/premium-services/index.html

Have a great day! :smileyhappy:
